Tanzania:  Stone Town, Zanzibar

walk through Stone Town, on the island of Sansibar.

We started  at the port and walk to the old market. The conditions there are best described as primitive.  It was packed with people. We continued on into the  heart of Stone Town, which is a maze of narrow alleys filled with people leaning out of shops calling out, "Hello my friend!"

We reached our first destionation, The Angelican Christ Church Cathedral, the former slave market site. This was the world's last open slave market. In the tiny rooms under the church 40 men and 40 women in each room were kept chained together.  Outside,  the Slave Memorial serves as a remineder. Next door is the children's school.

Continuing through town we see many of the famous  finely decorated wooden doors, a feature of Zanzibari houses. The  rich carvings and bas-reliefs, with big Indian brass studs. There are two main types of doors: Indian style which have rounded tops, and the Omani Arab style, which  are rectangular.  The elaborate carvings can be Islamic verses of the Qur'an or Indian  lotus flowers.

When we returned to the waterfront we walked past many of Stone Town's  major historical buildings. One of the most important is the former palaces of the sultans which we visited.
